Temple Israel of Putnam Valley (Lake Drive, Lake Peekskill) is inaugurating a new program of “synagogue skills” learning. Rather than conduct a normal Shabbat service, we will be gathering together to study and learn for an hour or so. What we hope to do is to explore, in a relaxed and informal format, a series of key prayers and rituals that take place in synagogues around the world during Shabbat services. Our hope is that those who attend will find that they will become more comfortable with the content of the service.

This program is especially designed for anyone who is interested in learning more about what all these prayers and rituals mean but was afraid to ask! EVERYONE IS CORDIALLY INVITED.

These informal “shul” sessions will take place on the 2nd & 4th Shabbat each month until further notice.

Regular Shabbat Services are held the 1st & 3rd Saturday each month at 9:30 am

Services are held in the Temple Sanctuary, Lake Shore Dr. in Lake Peekskill

All services are free and open to all!

All are invited to attend services.

Putnam Valley Historical Society:

Our History
Putnam Valley Historical Society Museum

Our new exhibit will open in May 2, 2015:
The Early Native American People of Putnam Valley

A little preview:

Before the Europeans came, the people who lived in this area belonged to the Canopus group of the Nochpeem band of the “Wappinger Indian Confederacy”. As part of the Mohican nation, they spoke the Algonkian language.

In 1600 an estimated 4,700 members of this confederacy ranged over an area that spread from Manhattan to Poughkeepsie, along the Hudson River and extending eastward toward Connecticut.

The footpaths made by the Native Americans usually followed the stream valleys.  The first settlers followed these footpaths and in the course of time, they became the roads we know today as Peekskill Hollow, Canopus Hollow and Oscawana Lake roads.

The next meeting of the Historical Society Board will take place
Tuesday, April 7th at 5:30 pm - hopefully at the Museum!

Steven McCarl - Music or Bust!

Meonhorse.medium
My determined effort to make song writing my career
and everything else my hobby!

After a rough patch in life I decided to open up Bear Mountain Music Studios and start recording my own music seriously. Countless hours and dollars later I am almost ready to have my first album mastered and printed.

I have been writing music since I was a young kid. It was always very important to me. I have written close to 200 songs spanning many different genres. The only career there can be for me is music.

I have done all of the production myself but I need your help to accomplish a few more things. Your donation helps with:

1) Live musicians: a string quartet for one of the pieces on the album
2) Mastering: the final step in music production
3) Printing and marketing: printing and mailing CDs and marketing kits with photos, general info, etc.
4) Software: even after just one year in business some of the studio’s software is going out of date and needs to be upgraded so we can keep recordings professional quality.

I have given up everything to make this happen.
Failure is not an option! Thank you for your help!

Conservation Partners Permanently Protect 31-Acres in Putnam Valley

Leading conservation organizations, Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) in Garrison and Westchester Land Trust (WLT) in Bedford, announced today that together they have permanently protected a critical landholding within the watershed of the Peekskill Hollow Brook, which is part of the Peekskill and Cortlandt drinking water supply system.

The two parcels of land, which will be combined and renamed the O’Connell Boulder Field Preserve, are located on Barger Street in Putnam Valley, NY.  The land was donated to WLT by the executors of the estate of William O. O’Connell, who owned the property.  WLT will maintain sole ownership of the Preserve, while HHLT will hold a conservation easement on the property, which will permanently protect the land and its natural resources.

The O'Connell family is thrilled that their father’s land will be protected forever.  “We are so happy that the Westchester Land Trust has protected this land.  Our father loved this property and cared for it for many years.  By creating this preserve you have given our family a great legacy.  Thank you,” said Mary O’Connell, Mr. O’Connell’s daughter and co-executrix of his estate along with her sister Margaret O’Connell.

About the O’Connell Boulder Field Preserve

Located on Barger Street in Putnam Valley, NY, the 31-acre O’Connell Boulder Field Preserve is visible from New York State park lands and public roadways.  It is a truly scenic open space primarily featuring wooded upland with maturing deciduous trees including a mix of oaks, maples, birches, and hickories.  A notable feature of the upland area is a large number of boulders and large stones, and a prominent rock outcropping of ledge along the northern boundary – thus, the name O’Connell Boulder Preserve.  The extensive central wetland, which covers approximately 14 acres, is a mix of wooded swamp, shrub swamp, and shallow marsh. A perennial stream flows from the north to south across the wetland, and a second intermittent watercourse is a tributary from the southwest.
