To the best of our knowledge, no change has been formally reported to the residents of Lake Peekskill regarding the quality of the lake water - although testing has taken place and it is likely that the algae levels have decreased substantially with the cooler temperatures and the passage of time.

The last DEC blue green algae map, posted 10/3, did not include Lake Peekskill.

Use your best judgment, and contact official sources for the latest official information regarding the advisability of swimming in, bathing in, or eating fish caught in Lake Peekskill. Follow this link to access the August 2014 Lake Peekskill 2014 Water Quality Monitoring Report prepared by Princeton Hydro, LLC.

A 9/17 e-mail from Scott Kishbaugh, DEC CSLAP Coordiantor, indicated:

"The lab results from the 9/15 shoreline bloom sample showed blue green algae levels of about 80 ug/|, above the DEC bloom criteria (=3Oug/l), and the microscopicanalysis showed "Woronichinia, Anabaena, and Microcystis" (all blue green algae species, some of which are capable of producing toxins). We don't yet have toxin data, but I will forward those results if they indicate high toxins."

Putnam Valley Free Library:

Update, posted on the Library's Facebook page, October 2nd:

When it was discovered that cracks in the wall on the Library's second floor were increasing, engineers were called in and our 2-story building was closed. After obtaining the necessary permits, construction began in May 2014. Approximately 400 sq. ft. of the second floor, which was built over the porch supported by the vertical piers adjacent to Oscawana Brook, was demolished. A new second floor front wall was built. The new window upstairs was installed on August 27th.

This construction project addressed structural issues. It was not a renovation of the building. The loss of the office and collection space upstairs generated changes in the layout of the Children�s & Teen collections. However, the main floor of the Library and the collections downstairs remain the same.

The final details of the current construction project need to be completed and the work inspected prior to the issuance of a new certificate of occupancy by the Building Dept. There are also some building repairs which must be addressed before we can reopen.

Please note that our parking lot is fully open. Our entrance is at the north end of the parking lot adjacent to the illuminated sign. Our exit is again located at the south end of the parking lot. Both our entrance and exit are one way traffic only.

You can continue to pick up library materials that you have requested online as well as return items in our Community Room. Just walk across our covered bridge for access to the room or to return Library materials in our book drop when we�re closed.

To order library materials online, click on the Mid-Hudson catalog icon on our website. Your Library card can also be used at any of the 65 other libraries in the Mid-Hudson Library System.

Hudson Highlands Land Trust Schedules Community Fireworks Display
Over the Hudson River to Celebrate 25^thAnniversary

As part of the celebration of its 25^th Anniversary, the Hudson Highlands Land Trust (HHLT) has scheduled a community fireworks display on Friday, October 10^th, 2014 (raindate: October 11^th). Scheduled to begin at 9:30pm, the fireworks should be visible from several vantage points on both sides of the Hudson River including Garrison Landing, Scenic Hudson Foundry Dock Park, Cold Spring Waterfront Park, Zulu Time Rooftop Bar & Lounge (Hotel Thayer, West Point), and the Route 9W Scenic Overlook.

The fireworks are only one aspect of HHLT�s year-long 25^th anniversary celebration. The Land Trust has organized three other activities and projects in tandem with this organizational milestone: the 25 Treasures of the Highlands Geocaching Adventure, a free self-guided �treasure hunt� that brings participants to 25 of the most picturesque and historically significant locations in the Hudson Highlands; a dinner gala at Boscobel House and Gardens, also on October 10^th; and Connecting: Celebrating the People and Places of the Hudson Highlands, a commemorative book featuring the photography of Nelsonville resident Christine Ashburn and essays by several local authors, due out in November.

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust is an accredited, community-based non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the natural resources, rural character, and scenic beauty of the Hudson Highlands. To learn more about HHLT�s programs and conservation work, please visit www.hhlt.org.
